On our July 6 episode of DVD Geeks (podcast here ), we spent some time talking about the great BBC docmentary "Apllo 11: A Night to Remember."
Since this is the annivervary of man's first walk on the moon, we wanted to share some cool links and resources from around the web to learn more.
First, be sure to check out the Guardian UK's debunking of the moon-hoax conspiracists who somehow still think that the hundreds of thousands of people involved in this undertaking were all part of a government plot that actually landed humans in the Arizona desert.
Finally the Bad Asrtonomer, Phil Plait, has written an entry at his Discover Magazine blog site about how the Apollo missions personally affected him. We recommend that along with his other recent entries anticipating this historic anniversary.
The day we have long awaited has finally arrived - MTV's breakthrough sketch-comedy series "The State" is finally out on DVD in a complete-series set.
Yes, there was a time when MTV was known for playing music AND for providing innovative original programming. "The State" were a comedy troupe of fresh NYU grads lucky enough to land a show and keep cranking out sketches for four seasons. The highly-anticipated DVD - with a wealth of special features - will be our focus Monday night, but we'll throw in a little art as well.
Criterion Collection continues to amaze us with some of the best-produced DVDs on the market. We'll examine two upcoming releases from French new-wave master Jean Luc Godard: "2 or 3 Things I Know About Her" and "Made in U.S.A." The latter finally made its U.S. debut in April 2009 after spending the last 43 years in copyright litigation.
Our resident Otaku Ryan will grace us with another installment of "Orient Express" about the latest happenings in the Asian entertainment marketplace, and we'll wrap it all up with our personal Geek Picks. Our Televixen Mary could only yell "YAAAAYYYY!" about her Geek Pick, "Stella."
It all starts Monday at 7pm Central LIVE on Fearless Radio !
We played a bit of catch-up with some of the great titles that came out over the last couple of weeks.
Starting with some fascinting documentaries, we relive the excitement of man's first walk on the moon with "Apollo 11: A Night to Remember" then visit the comlpetely alien world of overacheiving New York toddlers in "Nursery University."
We also feature a couple of vastly different comedies, from the sublimely silly imrpvosed antics of Reno's finest in "Reno: 911 Season Six" to the ridiculously overwrought "Pink Panther 2."
Next up, we take a look at Fred Durst's feature-film directorial debut with "The Education of Charlie Banks" and wrap it all up with the adorable Isla Fisher in "Confessions of a Shopaholic." We'd call it a "chick flick" but it was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. We'll see how well he works explosions into a romatic comedy.
On the June 8 episode of DVD Geeks, Tom and John praised the newly-released documentary about fantasy wirter Harlan Ellison, "Dreams with Sharp Teeth." One of the things we were inspired to do after seeing the terrific archival footage was to seacrh for Ellison on YouTube which revealed a treasure trove of interviews from throughout his career.
One of the (many) entertaining clips is this interview from 1980 which reveals only a glimpse of his disdain for being labeled a "scifi" writer and his take on some of the NY Times bestselling authors of the day.
If you can't stand listening to DVD commentaries (and we're shocked that there are some geeks who can't!), then you may just love the new series of releases from Rifftrax. The same guys who brought you "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" and, later, "The Film Crew" are back at it offering up their takes on films that are mostly better forgotten. A whopping ten volumes are released this week running the gamut from "The Three Stooges" to "Plan Nine From Outer Space" to vintage educational shorts.
Next, we take a long look at one of the most endearing foulmouthed rednecks in TV history - the incomparable Kenny Powers as brought to life by Danny McBride on "Eastbound and Down" from HBO. The show is infinitely quotable as long as there aren't sensitive ears nearby, so turn on your f---in' radio and listen up!
Rounding out the show will be Bergman's classic "The Seventh Seal" from Criterion and a classic of a very different sort, "The Outlaw" that made Jane Russel's anatomy quite infamous.
We'll have all that plus our own personal geek picks and more all starting LIVE at 7pm Central only on Fearless Radio !
