On this DVD Geeks we'll welcome special guests to discuss the week's most compelling new relases:
Up first, we'll savor the indie-favorite comedy all about nerds, high-school, proms and other unpleasantries - "Bart Got a Room" starring Cheryl Hines and William H. Macy.
Next, we'll compare the UK version of "Life on Mars" - out this week in a season 1 box set - with its American counterpart.
Our own Televixen will chime in with her take on Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" to see if all the fan-hype is justified. Finally, We'll look into the new 2-disc special edition of "The Bad Lieutenant" to see how bad Harvey Keitel is nearly 20 years later.
We've got all that plus a handful of honorable mentions, ourown "geek picks" and Televixen's report on the most important TV news to come out of Comic-Con!
From our first season - Mary, the Televixen, and Tom share their love for "The Prisoner" 40th Anniversary collection. We're looking forward to the new Prisoner with Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen - how about you?
Going to Vegas for the big Creation Star Trek convention ? Then join DVD Geeks and our friends from Trekcast on Wednesday August 5 at the SpaceQuest Casino & Bar (you know, the one that used to be the entryway into Star Trek: The Experience?) at the Hilton. We'll arrive a little after 9pm for drinks and socializing. Knowing us, there will definitely be some DVD giveaways happening too!
Geeks and Trekcast not enough for you? Well, our old pal Larry Nemecek is throwing his hat into the ring to take this gathering of geeks to the next level. Be sure to check out Larry's web site too!
See you all there, and don't forget to follow DVD Geeks and Televixen on Twitter!
When "Watchmen" was released, fans of the graphic novel were divided over some of the changes that were brought to the big screen incarnation. We'll dig deep into the new 2-disc Director's Cut to see if those 24 extra minutes hurt or help. Tom, our resident comic-book - um - graphic novel expert will guide us through the highs and lows of this big-budget Zack Snyder film.
Next, we'll catch up with the animated adventure, Coraline - brought to us in fabulous 3-D (glasses included with the DVD package), directed by Henry Selick, the same director from A Nightmare Before Christmas.
Next, Rory will invesitage the HBO documentary series The Alzheimer's Project and see how these touching stories stack up with the litany of great HBO series. And, finally, Tom will lower the collective IQ of us and our audience with a look at the teen amnesia comedy Miss March.
On our July 6 episode of DVD Geeks (podcast here ), we spent some time talking about the great BBC docmentary "Apllo 11: A Night to Remember."
Since this is the annivervary of man's first walk on the moon, we wanted to share some cool links and resources from around the web to learn more.
First, be sure to check out the Guardian UK's debunking of the moon-hoax conspiracists who somehow still think that the hundreds of thousands of people involved in this undertaking were all part of a government plot that actually landed humans in the Arizona desert.
Finally the Bad Asrtonomer, Phil Plait, has written an entry at his Discover Magazine blog site about how the Apollo missions personally affected him. We recommend that along with his other recent entries anticipating this historic anniversary.
