DVD Geeks recap - October 12

How To Be A Serial Killer

Have the rigors of life been getting you down? Are you fed up with a job that's going nowhere and need a change of pace? Maybe you should explore the exciting career opportunities of being a serial killer. That's the topic of this independent and (very) dark comedy that has been the buzz of Comic Con and and a festival favorite. "How To Be A Serial Killer" will guide you step-by-step to a new life and new hobbies along with some helpful hints about body disposal.

Next up, we'll have a look at the classic series by the late presidential hopeful Pat Paulsen. His "Half A Comedy Hour" featured a who's who of late '60s comedy stars on screen and off.

Sticking with the theme, we'll also look at the new stand-up act by Nick Swardson (known for his running stint as "Terry" on "Reno: 911"), and finally we'll delve into the world of musical theatre with the documentary "Every Little Step." Don't worry, though, this is the edgy, dark side of musical tehatre - not "Cats."

We'll welcome special guests, have a stock of "honorable mention" titles as well as fresh geek picks. Join us at 7pm Central on FearlessRadio.com !

SciFi DinerWe're always willing to share the podcast love with our brothers in sound. Our very own Televixen made a guest appearance with Miles and Scott from SciFi Diner to chat about the Bruce Willis film "Surrogates" as well as some of her other geeky obsessions like "Dollhouse," "FlashForward" and more. Don't miss this first-time team up! (Podcast available from iTunes and directly from SciFi Diner Podcast.)

The GateThis week, we have a variety of new releases to satisfy just about every taste. We'll start with the new "Monstrous" edition of the 1987 kid-friendly horror film "The Gate."

Next up - are you tired of squeaky-clean children's fare like "High School Musical"? Do you think they could be improved with the injection of crime, drugs, sex and murder? We've got a festival favorite that snuk in under the radar (even though it features Bruce Willis) - "The Assassination of a High School President."

Although we kind of were terrified of it in theatres, we will take the time to investigate all the stone-age features of "Year One" starring Jack Black and Michael Cerra.

Finally, we have to give it up again to Disney for coming out with some of the finest DVD releases on the market. Their new edition of "Snow White" puts their landmark feature-length animation back up on the pedestal where it belongs. We'll investigate all the special features and give you the low-down on this must-own collector's edition.

All that plus Geek Picks, honorable mentions and much more - join us LIVE at 7pm Central on Fearless Radio !

Wizard of OzOn the next DVD Geeks, we're off to see one of the most impressive box sets to show up on our doorstep in a long time. It's the 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition of "The Wizard of Oz." This set really deserves  all the  superlatives: best, biggest, longest, sharpest, etc. Rory and John will take an in-depth look at the packaging, features and unbelievable technical achievement in restoring this film classic.

Just to balance things out, we'll also take a look at Stephen Soderberg's collaboration with adult film star Sasha Grey in his "indie" experiment "The Girlfriend Experience." We'll also have our promised review of the charming "O'Horten" - another festival fave, and the weekly mix of honorable mentions, Geek Picks and so much more.

Don't miss us LIVE at 7pm Central on Fearless Radio !

Ruby Slipper AuctionComing up on DVD Geeks - we're taking a little bit of a detour before returning to our regularly scheduled program. Please stand by!

Call this episode a "supplemental" - we'll recap some of the winners from last night's Emmy broadcast and see which of those shows are worth your dollar on DVD. We'll also have an extended "honorable mention" segment with the DVDs we're watching this week - everything from scifi like "Sanctuary" season 1 to Brit-com "The IT Crowd" to another re-release of a horror cult film "Army of Darkness."

We've got those and much more for your listening pleasure at 7pm on Fearless Radio!

Ruby Slipper AuctionThen, join us next week for another all-new LIVE episode with full reviews of the latest, greatest DVD releases including the extensive "Wizard of Oz" 70th Anniversary Edition. In the meantime, DVD Geeks are proud to recommend the "Ruby Slipper Auction" ending on September 24. All proceeds go to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. It's a worthy cause and your chance to bid on wearable art from some of the world's top designers.
